A tribute to some great kids!

I used to watch those TV specials about the Duggar family. You know the one... they have 16 (or is it 17?) children, and they seem to be doing great. Everyone is happy, mom is sane (!), and they make do with what life gives them. I truly would love to emulate Mrs. Duggar in my mothering. Alas, I fall far short.

Once when I was watching the show Mrs. Duggar rattled off one positive thing about each of her children. She didn't have to hem or haw to figure out what to say, she seemed to know each child's personality so uniquely and well. I was always amazed that she could do that. I think it's very cool, and so I often think about what I would say if someone asked me about my children on the spur of the moment, (bear with me here,) what would I say?

ANDREW

Andrew is our oldest and he is a great kid! He loves to learn, especially when it comes to science, and ESPECIALLY when it comes to all things bug! He is an expert on bugs, in fact he was the only 4th grader to compete on the Science Bowl team from his school (which won 1st in the state!), and it was his great love of bugs that got him on the team. He is an obedient child who has a desire to follow the commandments of God, and he is helpful and kind to his siblings. He often takes Sophie outside and pushes her on the swings when I am unable to. He is always up for a card game or a board game, and usually beats the pants off the rest of us. We love him and are so glad he came to our family!
ETHAN
Ethan is a spunky and fun kid. He is a bit shy in unfamiliar situations, but once he gets comfortable he loves to be the center of attention. He is a leader amongst his peers, both academically and socially. If Ethan is doing something, he is sure to have lots of friends come join him. He is also an amazing artist and musician. Lately he has been figuring out familiar tunes on our piano, and adding chords to them. He enjoys nature, especially animals. He is a great brother to all his siblings, always up for riding bikes or playing outside. Ethan can be persistent when he knows what he wants, and we never have a dull moment when he is around! He is a joy to have in our family!

EMMA

Emma is a sweetheart. She has many varied interests, including ballet, horses, learning to read, card games, and playing with her siblings. She loves to play dolls with Sophie, and then turn around and act out a Pokemon game with her brothers. She is a girly girl through and through, and only recently decided that shorts are just as fun to wear as skirts! Emma is very helpful around the house. She often picks up her toys, or does cleaning for me without me even asking. And if she sees me starting to clean, she rushes over to help. She is looking forward learning how to sew when she turns six, and I'm looking forward to teaching her. She is extremly loyal, and mature for her age. She knows how to listen and participate in classroom settings, and is looking forward to starting kindergarten in the Fall. We are so greatful Emma is in our family!

SOPHIE

Sophie is a little ball of energy. She loves to laugh and play. She loves to play with her dolls, and is a very tender and caring mother, always making sure to feed them their bottles of milk ("because milk is good for you, right mom?") and making sure they have the blanket over them when going to sleep at night. She loves to be outdoors, and especially loves to swing. She has been known to cry if she doesn't get a full 30 minutes of pushing on the swing. She also is very adventurous, and doesn't know the meaning of the word can't. She loves to sing and dance to music, both on our i-pod play list and when anyone plays the piano. She enjoys reading books, and being on my team when the kids and I play games. She also likes to take naps! She has a very bubbly personality, in fact she started telling jokes much sooner than I would have expected her too. Her sense of humor keeps all of us smiling, and we are a happier family because she is with us.

Thanks for bearing with me. To some of you this will feel like brag fest. It's really not meant to be! Rather, I wanted to get down in writing how I feel about my children, so I can savor the moments of their childhood. They are growing up so fast, and we are at a fun time in our lives.

Have a great weekend!

Your post was so timely. I loved it in the first place, but later the day I read it, I needed a reminder of why I love my kids, so I stole your idea. Thanks for sharing! (And you kids are so adorable.)

As someone without children, I can only go off my own observations, but I have noticed that most parents are overwhelmingly critical of their children (may be a reflection of self-critical parents). So it was completely refreshing to read your descriptions without any caveats or disclaimers!

Loved your post...and how wonderful for the children to be able to see in print how wonderful they are. Good reading for them on a bad day at school or on the playground!!!!
